What Is the Book of Mormon?
The Book of Mormon is a collection of letters, historical records, and journals set in the New World. It’s the story of a family who migrated from Jerusalem to the Americas around 600 BC. The brothers in the family have a lot of conflicts which eventually leads them to form two separate nations – the Nephites and the Lamanites. The two nations go to war with each other many times throughout the book.
The centerpiece of the book is Jesus Christ’s visit to the Americas after His resurrection. He teaches them about baptism and forgiveness. He heals their sick and blesses their children. He establishes His Church. Unlike those in Jerusalem, the people listen to Jesus. Afterwards, they live in peaceful unity as the Church of Jesus Christ with no more “-ites” (no Nephites and Lamanites) for hundreds of years.
Eventually, the people become wicked again and divide back into Nephites and Lamanites. Around 600 AD, the Nephites are close to annihilation, a prophet named Mormon abridges centuries of records to compile The Book of Mormon. Mormon saw our day and compiled stories and inspiration that he felt particularly applied to us.
At the October 2024 General Conference, another modern prophet, Elder David A. Bednar, expanded on President Ezra Taft Benson’s perspective. Elder Bednar highlighted how the Book of Mormon’s messages can aid us in navigating today’s challenges. He likened our times to those described in the book of Helaman, emphasizing the dangers of pride and the need for repentance.
