As I prayed this morning as part of today’s Day of Prayer and Fasting for Unity and Good Will in the US, I felt a bit doubtful that people of polar political views could ever find unity again in this country… no matter how much we pray for America.
As I asked for the faith to believe, I was reminded of a dear friend of ours. He’s an angel God sent me when my mother passed and I went through a difficult divorce.
This man took my two youngest boys under his wing. He loves them as if they are his own. He counseled me in wisdom and love and helped me hang on in faith.
This man radiates Christ-like love and kindness. I have felt my Savior’s love for me so many times as I’ve been in his presence. I love him dearly and am so grateful for him.
And you know what? His political views are on the opposite end of the spectrum as mine. We don’t go around arguing or discussing politics. We have so many other important things to focus on when we’re around each other.
He doesn’t judge me for my political views or write me off. He is an encouragement and support to me and believes in me. And I feel the same way about him. He’s such a blessing to my husband, my kids and me.
We all can be that way with each other. No one is a sum total of their political views. We all have good qualities. Are we taking the time to see and rejoice in them?
I believe part of what has caused this discord and hatefulness is that some are writing people off as pure evil just because of their political views or which politicians they support.
My prayer is that our eyes will be opened and see the good in our fellowman regardless of our opinions on politics. Then perhaps we can find that unity and good will that could help heal our land regardless of what politicians do or say.
